This paper proposes an approach to detect the optimal placement of Unified Power Flow Controller (UPFC) to voltage drop compensation and reduce congestion. To find the location of shunt part of UPFC, we proposed new indices to voltage drop compensation. Also congestion rent contribution method used to determine the location of series part of UPFC. In order to reduce the solution space, we will establish a priority list. UPFC allows concurrent control of active and reactive power flow and voltage amplitude at the UPFC terminals. These specifications give UPFC the ability to improve the efficiency of the power system during various operating situations. For the case studies, 23-bus test system is selected and a UPFC is placed in the system. Simulation results show that the proposed method is able to detection the optimal placement of UPFC. Also simulation results show that with the installation of UPFC in network, voltage drop due to increasing the load is compensated and total congestion cost is decreased.
