Hessisches BibliotheksInformationsSystem

The Hessische BibliotheksInformationsSystem HeBIS is the electronic information and service union of academic libraries in Hessen and parts of the Rhineland Palatinate and is one of the six regional library unions in Germany. The organisation of HeBIS is integrated in the university structure of the State of Hessen. Central organisation is at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main along with the UB Johann Christian Senckenberg. The organisational unit HeBIS-Verbundzentrale (HeBIS VZ) includes 'Bibliothekarische Dienste' as library service centre and 'HeBIS Information Technology' (HeBIS IT) as technical services for the union.

HeBIS is based on a central union database in Frankfurt am Main with six local subsystems (at the Universities and Technical Universities in Darmstadt, Frankfurt am Main, Giessen, Kassel, Marburg, Mainz) equipped with the internationally widespread software from PICA OCLC.

The spectrum of the participating organisations is broad. University and technical university libraries, institutes and special libraries, state and city libraries have all joined up with HEBIS in order to carry out their tasks more efficiently by using a central service. About 27 independent cataloging libraries/library systems are active within the union. The HeBIS database ( incl. Retro Database) records currently over 42 million titles and norm data sets. These comprise 16 million titles of all types of publications with over 26 million records of stocks from all told 567 libraries of all sizes in the region.

HeBIS started production at the beginning of 1987 as a straight online catalogue union. Since then all tasks and aims have hugely expanded. Today HeBIS provides a complete service for libraries and patrons with all functional moduls for an efficient library organisation / adminstration based on international standards. Provision and maintenance of central cataloging and record databases for all types of publication (print media, E-books, E-journals,online resources) incl. external, foreign norm and retro data. Provision of and maintenance of a central user-friendly union portal with authentification routine, database selection, meta-search, availability search and integrated order elements. Provision and maintenance of aspects concerning local portals regarding local conditions (framework provision and maintenance of a union OPAC with special retrieval functions) Provision and maintenance of the union’s internal and national interlibray loan in cooperation with the rest of the union system Organisation and implementation of agreed acquisition of electronic journals and databases with the HeBIS-Konsortium and within an agreed financial framework Development of a full-text server System development and maintenance, library specific organisation and technical support Care of union libraries via user-facilitated auxillary help and material, training and further training measures, technical and organisational support Editor of an online journal pertinent to the Hebis Verbund (Hebis cocktail, extensive information services on the Hebis websites) Active participation in standardisation and coding tasks Planning and coordination projects national and international cooperation ( with other German library unions and OCLC partners and institutions)
