In this paper the historic and modern usage of lac resin has been introduced. The reasons for the instability of the shellac has been analysed during the storage period. In addition, the principle, the attempts and the methods in recent years to improve the stability have been summarized. The methods to improve the stability are chemical ways and physical ways. Through the chemical ways it formed chemical bonds after the reaction. Through the physical blending progress, it could form hydrogen bond or the physical separation. In the end, the ways to modify the shellac and the field it will be used have been prospected.
