There are two ways to enter the universities in Hong Kong. One is from the completion of secondary school while other is from completion of community college. Both types of students come across the academic, social and psychological adjustments when they just enter the universities. The purpose of this study is to examine the difference between these two groups of students in adjusting to engineering departments of universities in Hong Kong. The study is based on a survey of 456 first year engineering students from five Hong Kong universities. The findings show that (i) students transited from matriculation can adjust better academically than the students transited from the community colleges; (ii) students transited from matriculation can adjust better socially than the students transited from the community colleges; and (iii) students transited from matriculation can adjust better psychologically than the students transited from the community colleges.
